How do fillings work?

Whenever decay starts the enamel begins to breakdown so a filling is just that, it fills the area where the decaying tooth would have continued to digress. Typically, your dentist will number the area and the surrounding tooth material is removed to make room for the tooth filling which will be inserted into the space.

Change your ways!

To prevent future tooth decay, it is important to address the issue at hand, your behaviors. If the chances are high that your foods or drinks are rapidly increasing your tooth decay talk to your dentist. Things like sugar and strong acids can have extremely harmful effects on your teeth, don’t be afraid to speak to your doctor about these issues and making a plan to change them.

What types of fillings are out there?

Composite resin fillings, which are made to blend in with the color of your teeth and amalgam, which are silver. Amalgam have been used for decades as an affordable option for anyone who needed a filling. Composite resin fillings, closely related to plastic, is a bit more expensive but aesthetically pleasing.

How long do fillings last?

Fillings that have been composed of metal are extremely long-lasting, in some cases it is over 22-years before patients have needed a replacement. Ultimately, a patient’s activity and behavior plays a large role in the longevity of their fillings.

How should you care for your filling?

The best way to care for your fillings is to talk to your dentist, especially if you’re unsure. Avoid things like chewing on ice, sugary drinks, and use floss daily! Brushing your teeth regularly and being sure to have scheduled dental check-ups are the best ways to elongate your fillings lifespan.
